Despite revenue increases, revenues are not keeping pace with expenditures as the new Fiscal Year looms. There is a structural deficit in the budget, and this year's proposal includes spending $4.9 million in savings from the General Fund.

Deputy District Attorney Carolyn Schaffer is a graduate of UC San Diego and Santa Clara Law School, and she will be assigned a general caseload of felonies and misdemeanors.

Sheriff Mike Downey swore in three new correctional deputies today, funded via Measure Z. The deputies are Nicholas Arian, Kaleb Cohoon and Craig Wolff.

Due to a delay in hiring 48 additional staff, and revenues coming in higher than projected, there was an additional $2.54 million available for one-time use. Funds were allocated for: road repair; rural child welfare/protection, and; beds for substance abuse treatment services.

More than 200 new self-contained breathing apparatuses were inspected today at the Fortuna Volunteer Fire Department and prepared for distribution to local volunteer fire districts. The cost nearly $1.4 million.

More than 60 volunteers gathered over the weekend to clean up nearly 4,000 pounds of illegally dumped trash along the banks of the Eel River and in Fortuna. The trash was taken to Eel River Disposal and the dump fees are being paid by Measure Z, the half-cent sales tax passed by voters last year.

The Sheriff's application for Measure Z funds (PDF) included funding for additional sergeants. Rather than hiring from the outside, the Sheriff recently promoted Tony Gomes and Greg Allen to Sergeant. There are currently five new Deputy Sheriffs in the Field Training Program, and three more deputies will be hired by the end of August.

The Citizens’ Advisory Committee on Measure Z Expenditures at its meeting yesterday finalized its regular meeting schedule and appointed a chairperson. The committee will meet frequently until the beginning of May.

The Board of Supervisors continued its discussion regarding the formation of the Measure Z advisory committee. The Board decided it should be comprised of 9 members; one from each supervisorial district, two at-large selections chosen by a majority of the Board, one nominated each by the Humboldt County Fire Chief's Association and the Sheriff.
