The Crooked Prairie Fire Safe Council (CPFSC) is located in the Ettersburg area of Southern Humboldt and was established in 2005 as the result of the dissolution of the Crooked Prairie Fire Crew. The CPFSC became part of the Briceland Fire Protection District after its formation in June 2012. The organization of the CPFSC is intentionally small and simple; it is an all-volunteer group that meets approximately once a year and obtains all of its funding from donations and fundraisers.
Though small, the CPFSC has been capable of some major contributions to improving fire safety in their community. Some of their activities and accomplishments include: acquiring a grant for the installation of a 5,000 gallon water tank adjacent to a fire house, hosting an informative workshop on Sudden Oak Death, and equipping firefighters with personal protection equipment. In the spring of 2013, the CPFSC participated in the FLASH program, reducing fuels and increasing visibility on two miles of the Crooked Prairie Road. The total project cost was $10,473 and involved 8 landowners.
