Now you can check out a fun family experience, along with your books! Check out a free Sequoia Park Zoo Family Pass at the Library. Thanks to a partnership between the Sequoia Park Zoo and the Humboldt County Library, you and your family can visit the zoo at no cost. Each month starting on the first day of the month, four Family Passes will be available and four lucky families will be able to check them out. Just come to the circulation desk at the Eureka Main Library with your library card. Then visit the Zoo within one week. Where's the zoo? You'll find it at 3414 W St, Eureka, CA 95503.

The Redwood Artists Association presents more than 25 original artworks. Most can be accredited to the "Sunday Paintout" group who meet every Sunday to paint many of Humboldt County's magnificent architectural and organic local sights together. As Steve Lemke likes to say, 'Painting with friends en plein air' is always a plus. Works displayed include watercolors by both new and experienced artists in the RAA. You'll see familiar local landscapes and scenes from other locales. All are well worth your time! Artists include: Paul Rickard, John Jameton, Barbara Caldwell, Burleigh Wilson, and Lance Torgerson with watercolors; Steve Lemke with pastels; Jan Hollander with oils; and acrylic paintings by Lynn Niekrasz and Beth Gin.

Starting July 1, there will be new start times for some of the regular programs in the Eureka Library. Preschool story time will begin at 10:30 a.m. each Friday. Baby Read and Grow will begin at 11:30 a.m. on the first and third Fridays of each month. Baby Sign Workshop will begin at 11:30 a.m. on the second Saturday of each month. Please update your calendars - we don't want to miss you!

Instead of the usual Baby Sign Workshop, this month we'll be sharing songs and stories that incorporate sign language. Sign language is a fine way to start communicating with your baby even before baby can talk. There will also be time for individual and small group practice on signs based on participants' needs. Children and families can expect to have fun learning together. The next Baby Sign Workshop will be on September 9.

Pat Smith was the Children's Services Outreach Coordinator for the Humboldt County Library from 2004 to 2012. Her family and friends have made a donation to the library to create, in her honor, a collection of play materials and books for families to enjoy together.
