Do you want to improve your reading? Do you know someone who needs to learn to read? Reading is essential not only as a leisure activity but for success in all aspects of everyday life. Key areas where reading is very important include finding employment, finding housing, and using social services. Should you sign a cell phone agreement or apartment lease if you can’t read it? How do you fill out a job application without being able to fully understand the job description and employee responsibilities? In Humboldt County, an estimated 13,800 adults are functionally illiterate; they read below a fifth-grade level. Another 23,000 people in our county read below an eighth-grade level. Since 1985, Humboldt Literacy Project has been matching adult learners with trained tutors. Stop by and find out how you can be a part of it!

Dogs to the Rescue is a puppet show about two dogs who train humans to reduce climate pollution, employing a number of endearing and not-so-endearing canine behaviors. In the process of saving the planet, they make it a healthier and happier place to live. With songs, laughter, and audience participation, the two dogs show how communities can halve their greenhouse gas emissions in a dog's life span. The show was created by Dr. Wendy Ring, a local physician and climate activist, with the help of local musicians. After a six-state tour last summer, the show is now visiting local libraries for a Humboldt County tour.
