6:00 p.m. Arcata Library, A Novel Idea Book Group, Homegoing

Thursday, October 26, 2017

Homegoing, by Gyaa Yasi, is October's featured book. This novel begins with two sisters, one living in Ghana, one sold as a slave and transported to America, and brings to life 300 years of Ghanaian history and 200 years of America's saga. It's praised for the way in which 'the villages of West Africa come alive' (Isabel Wilkerson in the NY Times) lovingly detailing the cultural treasure, history and language lost when slavers came; for 'unforgettable characters' and its 'exquisite language, its implacable sorrow, its soaring beauty... monumental portrait of the forces that shape families and nations' (Goodreads)
